Formed from a part of the North American continent that split off 85 million years ago and was eventually colonized by European explorers, the United States of Atlantis is now an independent country, though not all within it are free. Descended from one of the founding families, Frederick Radcliff nevertheless lives as a slave because of his dark skin. When the chance comes to unite both black and "copperskin" slaves to fight for their freedom, Radcliff takes on the role of leader. VERDICT The master of alternative history continues to find new ways to explore the many possible variants of American and world history. Meticulously researched, with realistic characters and careful attention to detail, the latest in the author's Atlantis series ("Opening Atlantis: The United States of Atlantis") should please Turtledove's many fans.
