《大学》开篇云:"物有本末,事有终始,知所先后,则近道矣。"本书取"知所先后"为书名,并非有"近道"的企图,而是本书的内容多涉近代人物、史事和文献的考索,定其时序,求其始末而已。书中所收文章,多以散佚文献和隐晦人事的考证入手。作者认为前一项工作近似于文物残片的修补缀合,通过找寻残片的边缘痕迹或原有纹路,使之与已知史事或文献相印证,以冀稍能发抉幽隐。而社会的变迁,往往以人物的升降为枢纽,因此后一项工作关注"人与人之离合,事与事之交互",也自然成为钩沉历史的必由之路。
