Title details for 西游记 by 吴承恩(Wú Chéng'ēn) - Available
Tang Sanzang (唐僧) goes to Jinguang Temple (金光寺) and vows to sweep the Linglong Pagoda (玲珑宝塔) to clear the injustice against the monks. He is accompanied by Sun Wukong (孙悟空), Zhu Bajie (猪八戒) and Sha Wujing (沙悟净). The resident monks receive them with a tattered lantern and humble food. After a shared meal Tang Sanzang changes into plain garments and begins to clean. Inside the tower they find thick dust and bloodstains. Statues lie hidden beneath cobwebs. Tang Sanzang lights candles and works patiently. Sun Wukong clears the high tiers with swift, forceful strokes. On the thirteenth level he surprises two demons drinking and playing. He seizes them and brings them down for questioning. The two confess that the relic was stolen and identify Wan Sheng Old Dragon King (万圣老龙王), his daughter Wan Sheng Princess (万圣公主) and the Nine-headed Prince Consort (九头驸马) as the culprits. The court of Jisai Country (祭赛国) is alarmed. The king summons Tang Sanzang and praises him. He orders inquiries and promises reward and protection. Monks lock the captives in a small dark cell and stand watch through the night. The king charges the pilgrims to recover the precious relic and restore the realm. Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie volunteer to go at once. They refuse royal armor and set off on clouds with their own weapons. Along the way Sun Wukong forces the wounded fish messengers to reveal that the relic is hidden in Bi Bo Pond (碧波潭) within a Crystal Palace (水晶宫). At the pool the Nine-headed Prince Consort brags and takes up arms. He proves a dangerous, shape-changing foe. In the fight he manages to snatch Zhu Bajie and carry him into the palace to celebrate. Sun Wukong then dives beneath the water. He adopts the form of a crab and slips into the palace to scout. Quietly he frees his bound companion and reclaims Zhu Bajie's rake. The two devise a plan to lure the enemy ashore. Zhu Bajie bursts into the inner hall. He smashes columns and the dragon throne. Coral and crystal ornamentation are broken. The Crystal Palace is thrown into chaos. Wan Sheng Old Dragon King and his retinue flee in confusion. The pond falls into disorder. The episode highlights Tang Sanzang's compassion. It also reveals the disciples' mixture of cunning, ferocity and loyalty. The theft is exposed and the way toward recovering the relic is opened.
