《莲花落》以战乱年代为背景,讲述一对因战争失去家庭的底层男女漂泊求生的故事。主人公"我"与女子在逃亡途中相遇,共同以唱"莲花落"乞讨为生,从最初在凉亭的相依为命到此后二十余年的浪迹天涯,两人在饥寒交迫中形成"我们是两个人"的生命共同体。小说通过"莲花落"的曲调贯穿始终,既呈现他们沿街卖唱的艰辛日常,也暗喻命运如浮萍般漂泊。随着女子在某个寒夜病逝,"我"独自继续流浪,重复着"我们是两个人"的呢喃,在孤独中咀嚼往昔的温情与生存的荒诞。穆时英以新感觉派特有的碎片化叙事和细腻心理描写,将战乱中的个体命运嵌入都市、乡村的交错图景,既刻画了底层民众在时代洪流中的无力感,也通过"连花落"这一民间艺术形式,赋予苦难以诗意的悲鸣。本集另收录有《黑牡丹》《烟》《白金女体的肖像》。
