"Rocco's fourth case offers a procedural panorama with an abundance of subplots, characters, and lively dialogue" (Kirkus Reviews).
Rocco is still reeling from the death of his best friend's girlfriend, who was murdered as she slept in his bed. There's no doubt that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and paid the ultimate price. With the identity of the hitman still unknown, a cloud lingers over Rocco, dulling his judgment and leaving this anti-hero exposed to other threats. For Rocco has stepped on one too many people's toes over the years, namely the mafia that is still being rooted out in the small Alps town of Aosta.
To complicate matters, the kidnapped teenager that Rocco saved has not fully recovered. But all is not as it appears with that family. Her mother, father, and boyfriend are all running some sort of farce that Rocco can't easily crack. And now he must grapple between these two parallel investigations and find answers once and for all . . . before one too many skeletons come after him.

A beleaguered police detective unravels a mysterious prison killing while continuing the hunt for a dangerous hit man.Reeling from the brutal murder of Adele Talamonti, his best friend Sebastiano's girlfriend, Deputy Police Chief Rocco Schiavone hides out in a hotel far from his home in the Alpine town of Val d'Aosta. His only companion is his faithful dog, Lupa, a rare Saint-Rhémy-en-Ardennes. Rocco's guilt is severe since Adele had been staying at his house in his absence. Was he the real target of the killer? Searching for a likely suspect, Rocco runs through a list of criminals he's put away in the course of his long career (Out of Season, 2018, etc.). In the forefront is notorious madam Stefania Zaccaria, in the hospital after a head-on collision--an apparently convincing alibi, though not an ironclad one. As Rocco methodically investigates this case, another baffling one lands on his desk. During a prison riot, infamous inmate Domenico "Mimmo" Cuntrera is found dead, perhaps by a heart attack from the excitement of the riot. Cuntrera is another of Rocco's past adversaries who's been jailed for his involvement in a complex Mafia operation. Work should be a welcome distraction for Rocco. Friends and colleagues try to support him. But grief continually shadows him. Manzini peppers his account of Rocco's travails with the perspectives of several others throughout, like prisoner Sergio Mozzicarelli, who can't sleep because he saw the murder of Cuntrera and knows whodunit.Rocco's fourth case offers a procedural panorama with an abundance of subplots, characters, and lively dialogue. For readers new to the series, persistence will be needed, and rewarded.

Set in Italy’s Aosta region, Manzini’s quirky, multilayered fourth police procedural featuring hardboiled, wisecracking, sometimes misanthropic deputy chief Rocco Schiavone finds Rocco still shaken after the murder of his best friend’s girlfriend, who was shot to death in Rocco’s apartment in 2018’s Out of Season. Rocco, who’s sure that he was the intended target, fears that whoever tried to kill him will make another attempt to do so. A Mafia killing inside a prison that gets linked to an earlier kidnapping case adds to his worries. Busy as he is, Rocco finds time to heap scorn on subordinates, superiors, and friends—really, everyone but his devoted dog, Lupa, who brings out his seldom seen tender side. Manzini is also a screenwriter, and his prowess with dialogue shines, even in the slow stretches that eventually connect story lines as the plot wanders to the satisfying, if slightly ambiguous, payoff. Those who relish smart-aleck dialogue, gallows humor, and a protagonist with a prickly personality will have fun.

Police Chief Rocco Schiavone has been widowed, demoted from his position in Rome to Aosta, in northwestern Italy, and his best friend's girlfriend was just murdered in Rocco's apartment. Despite all that, a sense of justice impels him out of bed in the morning, looking for answers. His primary concern is finding out who shot his guest?with a bullet presumably meant for him. Rocco is also asked to help the family of a kidnapped girl he recently rescued (Out of Season, 2018). The girl is withdrawn, the father is philandering, and the mother is at her wit's end. Fans of the first three books in the series should have no trouble keeping track of the large cast of cops and criminals with whom Rocco interacts. Those new to the series will embrace the lone-wolf detective as their guide and learn to trust his instincts as he deftly moves from trail to trail, in search of a killer with some unfinished business.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
