Elinor Carlisle and Roddy Welman are the model English couple, perfect companions set for a life of ease when they inherit Aunt Laura's considerable fortune. But a poison pen letter begins a chain of events which is to end in tragedy. Convinced that Mary Gerrard, a childhood playmate of Elinor's, is attempting to ingratiate herself with her aunt for financial gain, the pair travel to the family home to investigate. They find no evidence but Roddy falls desperately in love with the beautiful Mary, little realising that beneath Elinor's restrained and unemotional exterior lies an almost obsessive passion for him. Elinor obeys her aunt's deathbed wish despite her heartbreak, and gives Mary a large bequest from the estate. But when Mary is found poisoned, the evidence against Elinor is damning. It's up to Hercule Poirot to find out if the case is as simple as it seems...

Elinor Carlisle has everything, so when she's to be tried for murder, everyone is shocked. Christie's clever plotting keeps even the most practiced sleuths on the trail until the very end of this topsy-turvy story. David Suchet renders each character with great individuality, interest, and seeming innocence, adding to the intrigue. Each of the stereotypes is fun, and even acceptable, under Suchet's influence. Listeners are in for an added treat because SAD CYPRESS is also one of Christie's best efforts. Not just for mystery fans, this portrait of manners will have wide appeal among fiction lovers. S.G.B. A charming, classic English country house mystery is brought to life in this radio dramatization. Hercule Poirot investigates the poisoning of a young woman following the death of a wealthy widow. Poirot is given a charming, astute characterization without overdoing it. The full cast of actors and complete sound track vividly create scenes, adding dimension a single narrator cannot. Gossipy whispering among servants, musical bridges and quick scene changes to advance the plot effectively build suspense and suspicion. This performance leaves the listener hoping Bantam will present more of Christie's tales--many well suited to the audio format. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
